The spring meeting of the Kentucky Ornithological Society was convened at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park near Prestonsburg, Kentucky, on April 30, 1999. The meeting was called to order by President Wendell Kingsolver at 7:30 p.m. The Friday night program included these presentations:
1) David Roemer presented video clips of 'good birds' located since the Fall 1998 meeting. Highlights of the video were a Pomarine Jaeger and Brown Pelican at Kentucky Dam and a Calliope Hummingbird at Reidland in McCracken County.
2) Lee McNeely presented slides from a recent trip to south Texas. Highlights included Green Jays, White-throated Robins, Whooping Cranes, and Clay-colored Robins.
3) Robert Young complemented Lee's presentation with excellent slides of some of the resident birds of south Texas.
On Saturday morning, Brainard Palmer-Ball, Jr., led a field trip on trails near the lodge and the lakeshore, while Fred Busroe led a trip to more remote regions of the park. On Saturday night, Steve Maslowski presented a video preview of an upcoming 55 minute documentary on the birds of North America.
On Sunday morning, there were two additional field trips: one terrestrial (along park trails) and one aquatic (from a pontoon boat on Dewey Lake).
During the weekend, 55 KOS members observed 83 species of birds, including Common Loon, Red-shouldered Hawk, Wild Turkey, Barred Owl, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Hermit Thrush, Blue-headed Vireo, Nashville Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, Worm-eating Warbler, and Kentucky Warbler.
