Kentucky Ornithological Society

Fall Meeting, 2001
Kenlake State Resort Park

The Kentucky Ornithological Society Fall 2001 Meeting was held at Kenlake State Resort Park on September 28-30, 2001.

The weather was great and migrant warblers and other passerines were present in very good numbers.  Unfortunately, shorebirds were not present in good numbers, apparently due to the high pressure and northerly winds.

As of Saturday evening, a cumulative total 123 species had been tallied by field trips and various individuals while birding the area.  On Sunday, 4 more species were added to the list resulting in a grand total of 126 species for the weekend.  Some of the birding highlights were as follows:

Interesting programs both evenings provided members with information on Kentucky's Clark's River National Wildlife Refuge provided by Rick Huffines (Manager of the refuge), Owl Vocalizations by Gary Ritchison, and Salt Marsh habitat and birds in California by Brian Myres.  Our sincere thanks are expressed to the presenters.

Those in attendance enjoyed the programs, the birding, the friendships, and the great weather.  What better way to spend a weekend than to observe and learn about birds in the company of friends while enjoying great weather.

There were several members present for the first time.  We hope to see many of these members become regulars in the future and that many of you will attend our Spring Meeting at Mammoth Cave National Park.
