The Anne Stamm Fund (focused on education of school children about birds) awarded three grants totaling nearly $1500 in 2009. The recipients were Tom Sawyer State Park Foundation, Concord Elementary School of Paducah, and South Marshall Middle School of Benton. The latter two awards will involve students working with the Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge.

The KOS Board encourages all members to make contributions to both the Anne Stamm Fund and the Burt Monroe Fund. To do so, make checks payable to the Kentucky Ornithological Society (and designate on the check or in a cover letter where the funds should go) and send to Lee McNeely, Treasurer, Kentucky Ornithological Society, P.O. Box 463, Burlington, KY 41005.

The Kentucky Ornithological Society has a variety of bird-oriented magazines and journals available for purchase. All prices will be negotiated, but most magazines and journals will be sent for the cost of shipping. Of course, donations of additional money to the Kentucky Ornithological Society will be accepted. The list of available items can be viewed at www.biology.eku.edu/kos/journals.html. If interested, please contact Brainard Palmer-Ball, Jr. at brainard.palmer-ball@ky.gov.

An update to the KOS publication, an "Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Kentucky" (1988) by Burt Monroe, Jr., Anne Stamm, and Brainard Palmer-Ball, Jr. is now available.  The Checklist's 2nd edition is available for $10.00 (taxes included) plus $2.00 shipping/handling if you have a copy mailed to you.  Orders should be sent to:

February 2011

Great Backyard Bird Count - February 18 - 21, 2011 - For more information, check the GBBC website! Everyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to seasoned experts. During the count, bird watchers tally up birds for as little as 15 minutes, or for as long as they like, keeping track of the highest number of each bird species they see together at one time. People are encouraged to report birds from public lands and local parks, as well as from their backyards. Participants enter their numbers online at www.birdsource.org/gbbc and can explore sightings maps, lists, and charts as the count progresses.

Year-round, anyone can view results from past counts and learn how to participate by visiting www.birdsource.org/gbbc.

June 2011

Each June, over 2500 skilled birders volunteer to participate in the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). The only requirements for participation are (1) access to suitable transportation to complete a survey, (2) good hearing and eyesight, and (3) the ability to identify all breeding birds in the area by sight and sound. Knowledge of bird songs is extremely important because most birds counted on these surveys are singing males. If you meet these criteria and would like to participate in the BBS, please contact Brainard Palmer-Ball, Jr., our state coordinator.
