The Fall 1999 meeting of the Kentucky Ornithological Society was held at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park, Jamestown, KY, from September 24-26. The birding highlight of the meeting was the sighting of a Brown-headed Nuthatch on a Sunday morning field trip to the campground area below Wolf Creek Dam.

The meeting was called to order by President Wendell Kingsolver at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24. The Friday evening program included the following presentations:

1) David Roemer - videos of interesting Kentucky birds observed since the Spring meeting

2) Lee McNeely - video of a Green Violet-ear that made a short visit to northern Kentucky this fall

3) Neil & Virginia Eklund - slides of birds of Alaska taken during their recent trip

4) Wendell & Marilee Thompson - slides of birds of Midway Island & a report on their volunteer work at that location

5) Laura Burford - update of projects by the non-game division of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources

6) Gary Ritchison - presentation about the KOS website


On Saturday morning, members departed on field trips to Green River Lake and the Cumberland Lake area. Field trip leaders were Fred Busroe and Brainard Palmer-Ball, Jr.

The Saturday evening program was provided by Gary Ritchison. The title of his presentation was Hunting, Hooting, and Reproducing: Owl in a Night's Work.

During the weekend, KOS members observed 93 species, including Brown-headed Nuthatch, Common Loon, Merlin, and Peregrine Falcon.
