The proposal is typically prepared and submitted during a student's first or second semester. The Thesis Research Proposal should contain the following: Cover page, Table of Contents, Abstract, Introduction (including review of the literatures and statement of objectives), Methods and Materials, Literature Cited, Budget, Biographical Sketch, and, if appropriate, an Approval Form from either the Department or University Animal Care committee.
Cover Page - The cover page should include the title of the proposed work and the name and address of the student.
Table of Contents - The Table of Contents should list the major sections of the proposal and provide the page number of each section (or where each section begins).
Abstract - The abstract should summarize the proposed research in 200 words or less.. The abstract should concisely summarize the objectives, methods, and significance of the proposed research.
Introduction - The introduction should include: (1) a thorough review of the pertinent literature, (2) a clear indication of why the study is needed (i.e., what 'gap' in the literature will the study address), and (3) a statement of objectives.
Methods and Materials - This section should include a detailed description of the methods and materials to be used in the proposed study, including data analysis. If appropriate, this section should also include a description of the study area(s).
Literature Cited - All publications cited in the text of the proposal should be included in the literature cited section. The format used should conform to that used in a journal in your field.
Budget - The budget should include (1) a list of supplies needed to conduct the study and the cost of those supplies and, if appropriate, (2) travel costs (the cost of travel to and from study areas).
Biographical Sketch - A brief biographical sketch should be included in the proposal. This should include the student's educational background (colleges attended and degrees awarded), professional work experience, and previous research experience.
Animal Care Approval Form - Research involving animals must be approved by the Department's Animal Care Committee and, in some cases, may have to be approved by the University Animal Care Committee. See the Department's Animal Care Website for additional information.
