Dr. Bob Frederick

Welcome from our chair, Dr. Robert B. Frederick

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Biological Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University. We are all about learning and discovery, and we care about each and every student that comes through our doors. The department offers a wide variety of classes covering the realm of biology. Specifically, we have over 450 undergraduate majors in 4 B.S. degree programs; Biology, Biology Teaching, Environmental Studies, and Wildlife Management. We also have options in Aquatic Biology, Botany, and MCMB (microbial, cellular, and molecular biology) and Environmental Studies options in Natural History and Land Resources. With 30 full-time and 20 part-time students, our M.S. program in Biology has options in Bioinformatics and Applied Ecology. In addition to teaching Biology majors, our faculty members teach courses critical to the health sciences majors and courses required in the general education program. In a typical semester over 2,000 non-majors are enrolled in these courses, which include over 85 lab sections. All this learning takes 24 full-time faculty members, 14 graduate assistants, 20 part-time instructors, and 3 full-time staff. We are fortunate to have an Administrative Assistant, Barbara Rupard (who prefers to be called the secretary), who has been running the BIOS office for nearly 30 years, so if anything has gone smoothly lately, she is probably responsible for that.

Ok, I’ve given you some specific numbers, but I consider the department’s strengths to be in areas not related to numbers. We have talented and knowledgeable faculty and staff that care about the students they serve and about scholarship, so that makes my job pretty easy. We cover nearly every area of biology, from the molecular level to the ecosphere, whether structure or function, plant or animal, rare or common, nearby or far away. Our faculty members are engaged in research projects that involve both undergraduates and graduate students, contribute to new knowledge, and serve the economy, environment, region, state, and planet. We also take seriously our role in the development of EKU’s non-science majors and in preparing them to be good and informed citizens.
If you have any specific questions or are interested in any of our programs, please contact me by using the information below.

Sincerely,

Bob F
